Two Tests, two centuries, Shubman Gill’s time as Indian Test skipper couldn't have gotten off to a better start as the Prince of Indian cricket brought up another century against England, on July 2 (Wednesday) in the second Test.
Before the start of this series, the right-hander just had one fifty in SENA conditions, and suffered a terrible fate of form otherwise. When he was appointed as the Test skipper, the criticism skyrocketed, as Gill’s place in the Test side wasn’t guaranteed.
But the turnaround with the bat has been such that all those criticisms have turned into claps, as the right-hander smashed a stellar 147 on his Test debut as a captain in Leeds. However, his century came in a losing cause as India lost by five wickets defending 370.
Today at Edgbaston, Gill walked in to bat at 95/2, when the ball was doing something. The 25-year-old then masterfully soaked all the pressure and counter-attacked the hosts with a stellar century, comprising 13 boundaries.
According to Cricviz, during his entire stay at the crease on day one, Gill only played a total of 4% false shots, the lowest-ever figure for a centurion in Tests in England in the last 19 years.
It was a knock of the highest order, as the Indian skipper brought up his second century in as many Tests, joining Virat Kohli in a unique club, with multiple centuries in the first two Tests as captain. Not just that, he also joined an illustrious club of Indian batters to score a century at Edgbaston.
