Shreyas Iyer and Shardul Thakur are set to feature in the Ajinkya Rahane-led Mumbai squad in the forthcoming Irani Cup match against the Rest of India, Cricbuzz reported on September 23 (Monday). The five-day red-ball fixture will be played in Lucknow from October 1.
The Mumbai Cricket Association is yet to announce the full squad. Mumbai, who won their 42nd Ranji Trophy title earlier this year, will be boosted by Thakur's return. The fast-bowling all-rounder hasn’t played any competitive cricket since the IPL. He underwent a foot surgery in June and seems to have fully recovered.
Meanwhile, Iyer would want to make a mark in the Irani Cup after having a mediocre Duleep Trophy. The middle-order batter could only manage 154 runs across six innings at an average of 25.66. He scored two fifties but also had three scores of below 10.
Rahane didn’t feature in the Duleep Trophy as he was in England playing County Championship and One Day Cup for Leicestershire. The right-hander, who hasn’t played for India since August 2023, scored 202 runs in six innings @ 33.66 in the County Championship and 378 runs across 10 innings @ 42 in the One Day Cup.
