Rain, Last Over Drama, Missed Run-Out: GT End MI's Streak In Cinematic Style
MI remain very much in contention for the playoffs, though finishing in the top two may now be difficult
The Match 56 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Wankhede Stadium went right down to the wire and offered everything a thrilling cricket game could offer. Eventually, it was the Titans who emerged victorious on the final delivery of the match, ending MI’s six-match winning streak.
After GT restricted MI to 155/8 and reached 107/2 at the end of 14 overs, it looked like Shubman Gill and Co. would cruise to victory. It had been drizzling for a while in Mumbai, and Jos Buttler’s dismissal had put MI ahead in terms of the DLS method. However, Sherfane Rutherford smashed Will Jacks for 15 runs in the 13th over and Ashwani Kumar for 13 runs in the 14th to push GT eight runs ahead.
As the rain got slightly heavier, the umpires asked the players to leave the field. The Titans were ahead at that point, but once the rain stopped and play resumed, MI captain Hardik Pandya wasted no time in bringing Jasprit Bumrah into the attack.
Bumrah, Trent Boult, and then Bumrah again bowled the next three overs, during which GT lost three wickets for just 18 runs. Left-arm seamer Ashwani Kumar bowled the 18th over and dismissed Rashid Khan while conceding only seven runs, putting MI right on top of the contest.
In the span of four overs, the Titans lost four wickets and were now five runs behind the DLS par score. The rain intensified again, and GT still needed 24 off 12 deliveries. After a delay of more than 30 minutes, the rain stopped just in time to allow GT to play one more over and score the remaining 15 runs to secure their eighth win.
With Bumrah, Boult, and Ashwani having completed their quota of overs, Hardik Pandya handed the ball to Deepak Chahar for the final over. For GT, the responsibility was on ‘Iceman’ Rahul Tewatia and Gerald Coetzee.
What followed: 4, 1, 6, N1, 1, W, 1
Chahar bowled full on the first delivery, and Tewatia smoked it straight down the ground for a boundary. He took a single off the next ball, and Coetzee then lofted another full delivery over long-off for a six. Just four were needed off three, and Chahar overstepped, bringing the equation down to two off three.
Tewatia took a single towards deep mid-wicket, leaving one run to get from two deliveries for Coetzee. The South African pacer, however, went for glory and ended up getting caught at deep square leg. In came Arshad Khan, who hit the last delivery straight to Pandya at mid-off.
The MI captain had all the time in the world to effect a direct hit but missed, allowing Arshad to complete the run and give GT a memorable victory. Chahar didn’t go back to collect the ball. Suryakumar Yadav was running toward the stumps but wasn’t in a position to receive the throw. Pandya could still have taken his time and sent in a one-bounce throw to SKY, who might have had enough time to complete the run-out.
But it wasn’t meant to be. MI’s six-match winning streak came to an end, while GT climbed to the top of the IPL 2025 points table. This was the first time a MI-GT clash ended with the chasing team winning.
Mumbai remain very much in contention for the playoffs, though finishing in the top two may now be difficult, and they might have themselves to blame for it.
