Veteran batter Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed for 27 & 0 in his two innings in the first round of the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 match against Jammu & Kashmir in Srinagar. However, he has redeemed himself in the second game against Chhattisgarh in Mumbai, as he slammed a superb century.
This was his 42nd first-class century, while he also has 59 fifties in the format to his name. Rahane came into the crease at three, after Mumbai lost Musheer Khan in the ninth over and soon, they were reduced to 38/3. That's when Rahane and Siddesh Lad (80) got together and put on 165 for the fourth wicket to resurrect the innings.
Once Lad fell, Mumbai lost Sarfaraz Khan, who scored 42 & 32 in the previous match, for just 1. Sarfaraz would have hoped to score big and stake claim for a place in the Indian Test side, and will hope to make a bigger contribution in the second innings.
Rahane was eventually dismissed for 159 off 303 deliveries with 21 fours punctuating his innings. In fact, he had retired hurt on 118 and came to bat once again at the fall of the sixth wicket.
The 37-year-old played last of his 85 Tests for India in 2023. However, he still harbours hopes of playing for his country one day, despite India having moved on with the likes of Sai Sudharsan and Devdutt Padikkal coming in recently.
At the time of writing this, Mumbai were on 388/7, with Akash Anand and skipper Shardul Thakur at the crease.
