Shubman Gill improved upon his scores from the first innings immensely as he scored a fighting hundred at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on January 25 (Saturday) during Punjab’s second innings against Karnataka in a Ranji Trophy 2024-25 sixth-round clash.
However, his knock of 102 off 177 balls went in vain as his team lost the game by an innings and 207 runs. Having been bowled out for their second west total in Ranji Trophy ever (55), Punjab could manage to get only 213 in their second essay against Karnataka’s first innings total of 475.
Gill, who could manage only four runs in the first innings, had been under tremendous pressure after he failed in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 Down Under.
However, with this knock of his in which he hit 14 fours and three sixes, the 25-year-old was a one-man army as he didn’t even find enough support from any other batter at the other end.
The highest partnership was 63 runs between Gill and Mayank Markande for the eighth wicket. However, it was never going to be enough as Shreyas Gopal and Yashovardhan Parantap got three wickets each while Prasidh Krishna got two to end Punjab’s innings.
Heading into the ODI series, this innings would be a great c confidence booster for Gill, even if he doesn’t play the next Punjab Ranji game against Bengal, starting January 30.
