Relief For Shreyas Iyer; Batter Discharged From Hospital After Laceration Of Spleen
Iyer had suffered a serious injury while fielding during the ODI series in Australia
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released its third medical update on Shreyas Iyer’s condition, confirming that the batter is “medically stable and recovering well” after suffering a serious injury during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25 October 2025.
The statement said, “Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress.”
The update comes as reassurance for fans who had been concerned after Iyer’s dramatic on-field injury. During the match, the Indian batter took a diving catch to dismiss Alex Carey, but landed awkwardly, immediately clutching his left side. He was rushed off the field and subsequently admitted to a Sydney hospital, where scans confirmed a laceration to his spleen and internal bleeding. He was kept in the intensive care unit as a precaution due to the sensitive nature of the injury.
In an earlier statement on 28 October, the BCCI had shared that “the injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested. His condition is now stable, and he continues to be under observation. A repeat scan done on Tuesday, 28 October, has shown significant improvement, and Shreyas is on the road to recovery.”
The nature of Iyer’s injury, which is a potentially dangerous internal trauma, means his rehabilitation will be gradual. While the board has not provided a specific timeline for his return to competitive cricket, it has made clear that his progress will be monitored closely before any decision is taken.
