Gautam Gambhir has requested the BCCI to consider former South African seamer Morne Morkel for India’s bowling coach role, Cricbuzz reported on July 12 (Friday). The newly appointed head coach of the Indian team, Gambhir has already recommended Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate’s names to the BCCI.
Morkel has worked with Gambhir for two seasons at Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League. The 39-year-old, who played 86 Tests, 117 ODIs, and 44 T20Is for the Proteas, was Pakistan’s bowling coach in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Morkel then quit the job before his contract expired.
It’s not a secret that the BCCI prefer Indian coaches, so it will be interesting to see how they react to this demand of Gambhir who has requested a free hand in managing the team. There have been reports suggesting that Lakshmipathy Balaji and Vinay Kumar are also in contention for the role of India’s bowling coach, while the BCCI are keen on having Zaheer Khan for the role.
T Dilip, who served as the fielding coach under outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid, is likely to be retained. Gambhir and his support staff will take charge of the side from the Sri Lanka tour, consisting of three T20 Internationals and as many One-Day Internationals, starting July 27.
