India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been ruled out for six weeks after fracturing his toe, according to a report on the Indian Express. That effectively means that he is not just ruled out of the ongoing Manchester Test, but he will also miss the fifth and final match of the series at The Oval, which begins on July 31.
“The scan report showed a fracture, and he is ruled out for six weeks. The medical team is trying to see if he can come out to bat again by taking a painkiller. He still needs support to walk, though, and chances of his batting looks very bleak,” a source in the BCCI confirmed to The Indian Express.
Pant was struck on his right toe on the full by Chris Woakes on Day 1 of the fourth Test, and was escorted off the field as he was in severe pain. He was batting well on 37 but missed the ball while attempting an audacious reverse sweep.
As Pant is not fit, Dhruv Jurel will once again have to fill in the wicketkeeper's role as he did in the previous Test at Lord's, as Pant was nursing a finger injury.
India ended Day 1 of the Manchester Test on 264/4, with Sai Sudharsan (61) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (58) slamming fifties.
