Rohit Sharma, who led India in 24 Tests, announced his retirement from Tests on May 7 (Wednesday), right after the news of him being removed as India captain was published by a leading media house as exclusive, hours before.
“Hello everyone! I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It has been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support through the years. I will continue to represent India in ODI format,” Rohit wrote on his Instagram handle.

The 38-year-old, who led India to the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) in the 2021-23 cycle, was out of form in the longest format, averaging 6.20 and 15.6 in four-match and three-match series against Australia and New Zealand, respectively in 2024.
Having played 67 Tests, Rohit scored 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57 with 12 centuries and 18 fifties to his name.
From the time it was made clear that Rohit would not be able to lead the Indian team on tour of England, his place in the playing 11 came under the scanner and thus, there was hardly any option left for the veteran but to call it quits.
Having already retired from T20Is, the 2027 50-over World Cup remains the biggest motivation for the Mumbaikar’s cricketing life.
