India's white-ball captain Rohit Sharma has been named as the captain of India's Test team, BCCI selection committee chairman Chetan Sharma confirmed on Saturday.
Rohit, who replaced Virat Kohli as the T20I captain in November, was named India's ODI skipper and Test vice-captain ahead of the tour of South Africa in December and January.
However, he did not travel with the squad due to a hamstring injury as KL Rahul led the team in the ODI series against South Africa.
After India lost the Test series 2-1, Kohli announced that he is stepping down from his role as the Test captain.
Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been named Rohit's deputy for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka while senior batter Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara received the axe.
"The selection committee deliberated a lot on Rahane and Pujara. We told them we will not consider them against Sri Lanka but doors are open for them. We told them to go and play Ranji Trophy," Sharma said at the virtual press-conference.
The series will also mark the return of Kuldeep Yadav while Uttar Pradesh's left-arm spinner Saurabh Kumar received his maiden Test callup. Ravindra Jadeja, who missed second Test against New Zealand, South Africa tour and the ongoing West Indies series due to injury, has been named in the Test and T20I squads.
Off-spinner Jayant Yadav kept his place from the New Zealand home Tests while senior pacer Ishant Sharma and wicketkeeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha were also dropped for the series.
Opener Priyank Panchal, India A skipper for the shadow tour of South Africa, has also been named in the Test squad while KS Bharat will continue as reserve wicket-keeper. Panchal was also part of the squad during the South Africa Test series after Rohit was ruled out due to injury.
Kerala batter Sanju Samson returned to the T20I squad after featuring in last year's limited-overs series against Sri Lanka last July. Injured trio KL Rahul, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar were ruled out of the entire series, with Ruturaj Gaikwad, Deepak Hooda and Kuldeep replacing them for the T20Is.
Rishabh Pant, Virat Kohli and allrounder Shardul Thakur have been rested for the three T20Is from February 24-27 in Lucknow and Dharamsala. Kohli and Pant will return for the two-match Test series set to be played in Mohali and Bengaluru, which will host the Day-Night match.
