Rohit Sharma to practice with Mumbai team ahead of second round of Ranji Trophy: Report

Rohit last played a Ranji Trophy game in 2015, and it’s still not sure whether he will play Mumbai’s next Ranji fixture

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma will attend Mumbai’s practice session for the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy at the Wankhede Stadium on January 14 (Tuesday), reported the Indian Express. The right-handed opener has already resumed his training at the MCA-BKC ground for the upcoming Champions Trophy, starting on February 19.

Rohit had an embarrassing Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, managing just 31 runs across five innings. Rohit missed the first Test in Perth due to the first of his second child, and India ended up winning the match by a margin of 295 runs.

He made his return in the second Test and disturbed India’s winning combination. India lost two of the next three Tests and looked completely clueless under his captaincy. He batted in the middle-order in the second and third Tests but moved to the top in the fourth Test, pushing in-form KL Rahul down to No.3. That didn’t do the trick either, and Rohit then “opted out” of the fifth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Following a series defeat in Australia after 10 years, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir said he wants his players to play domestic cricket. Rohit last played a Ranji Trophy game in 2015, and it’s still not sure whether he will play Mumbai’s next Ranji fixture. The second round of the red-ball competition will commence on January 23, with Mumbai taking on Jammu And Kashmir.

“He will be coming for practice sessions with the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team and it is still not decided whether he will be playing the next Ranji Trophy game against J&K. He will inform the MCA in due course,” a source in the MCA informed the Indian Express.

There is no update on whether Virat Kohli will play for Delhi or not, but Shubman Gill, who had a mediocre series in Australia, is expected to play for Punjab against Karnataka.

India’s next assignment is a five-match T20I series against England, starting on January 22 and ending on February 2. The two teams will then be involved in a three-match ODI series ahead of the Champions Trophy and all three aforementioned players will most likely feature in the series.
