'Seniors Weren't Happy With Nayar': BCCI Source Reveals Reason Behind Sacking
Less than a year after his hiring, Abhishek Nayar has been fired from his role as an assistant coach
Less than a year after his hiring, BCCI confirmed that they won’t extend Abhishek Nayar’s contract as an assistant coach, in the wake of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy disaster, on April 17 (Thursday). Nayar was the first casualty in the wake of India’s disastrous outing at home against New Zealand and away in Australia.
The Mumbai all-rounder was only roped in on the backing of head coach Gautam Gambhir, with whom he forged a strong relationship during KKR’s IPL win in 2024. However, according to Hindustan Times, even Gambhir didn’t back Nayar, with the report suggesting that he wasn’t happy with the former all-rounder.
Not just that, the reports also went on to add that the seniors in the Indian dressing room weren’t happy with Nayar, which was one of the primary reasons behind his sacking.
"The board officials took feedback from senior cricketers and some were not happy with Nayar's role inside the dressing room. He was informed about the non-renewal of his contract a few days ago," a BCCI source told Hindustan Times.
In the past, India’s multi-format batter KL Rahul applauded the all-rounder’s role in the dressing room, crediting him for his white-ball success.
"Big shoutout to Abhishek Nayar. I've worked a lot with him ever since he's come into the Indian team."
Despite that, the BCCI have decided to swiftly move on from the Mumbaikar, with Sitanshu Kotak being appointed as the batting coach earlier this year.
