South Africa have included Senuran Muthusamy in their squad for the two-match Test series in Bangladesh, starting on October 21. The spin-bowling all-rounder played the last of his three Tests in March 2023. Apart from Muthusamy, Dane Piedt and Keshav Maharaj are the other two spinners in the Proteas set-up. Matthew Breetzke is the only uncapped member in the squad.
There were question marks over this series after the political turmoil in Bangladesh, but Cricket South Africa confirmed that it will go as scheduled after their security assessment team was satisfied with the conditions in Bangladesh.
"I want to firstly thank both boards, Cricket South Africa and the Bangladesh Cricket Board, for ensuring the series goes ahead. Bangladesh is always a tough place to tour. They've become a formidable side at home and we have to be prepared for the challenge that awaits us. We have therefore chosen a squad for the conditions we are expecting to greet us when we get there,” said South Africa’s red-ball coach Shukri Conrad.
"We have three frontline spinners and all of them have the ability to step up at any time they are needed. This is a great chance for someone like Senuran, who has potential to make a mark with both bat and ball. We are really looking forward to seeing what he can offer. Overall, we trust the depth and versatility in our squad to meet this challenge head-on."
Kagiso Rabada, Nandre Burger, Dane Paterson and Wiaan Mulder are the fast-bowling options, while Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee are currently on break and weren’t considered. Lungi Ngidi and Anrich Nortje have also not been picked.
