Shimron Hetmyer, Oshane Thomas return for India ODIs

However, experinced West Indies duo of Nicholas Pooran and Jason Holder were unavailable for selection

West Indies have named their 15-member squad for the upcoming One-Day International (ODI) series agianst India. Hard-hitting batter Shimron Heymyer and fast bowler Oshane Thomas have been included in the squad after recovering from an injury. Both are set to play their first game for the West Indies after a two-year absence.

However, Keemo Paul misses out through injury, while Nicholas Pooran and Jason Holder were unavailable for selection.

Hetmyer has not been picked by the West Indies since last year, when he was dropped from the tour of Australia and the subsequent T20 World Cup 2022 after he missed a flight. He was also not picked for the World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe, where his side failed to make it to the main draw.

Fast bowler Jayden Seales and leg-spinner Yannick Cariah too have found a place in the squad following their surgery and rehabilitation. In further good news, left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, who missed was ruled out of the Qualifiers due to a lower-back injury also returns to the squad.

“We welcome Oshane and Shimron back into the group. Both have played at the international level before, with some success, and we believe they will fit well into the set-up. Oshane brings pace and is a potential wicket-taker with the new ball. Shimron’s style of batting will offer a lot especially in the middle stage of the innings and he is also a potential ‘finisher,'" West Indies lead selector Desmond Haynes said.

The ODI series kicks off at the Kensington Oval, Barbados on Thursday (July 27), where the first two games will be played. The action will then shift to the Brian Lara Cricket Academy for the final ODI on August 1.

A five-match T20I will follow the ODI series. Three will be played in the Caribbean, starting August 3 while the last two will be played in the USA, with the series concluding on August 13.

West Indies ODI Squad: Shai Hope (c), Rovman Powell (vc), Alick Athanaze, Yannic Cariah, Keacy Carty, Dominic Drakes, Shimron Hetmyer, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Kyle Mayers, Gudakesh Motie, Jayden Seales, Romario Shepherd, Kevin Sinclair, Oshane Thomas
