As if the molestation of Australian cricketers in Indore was not enough, a minister in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led state government even shifted the blame to the cricketers for not informing local security before going out in public. The unfortunate incident occurred after some Australian team members were going to a cafe in the city, having won their ODI World Cup 2025 match against England the evening before.
Madhya Pradesh cabinet minister Kailash Vijayvargiya courted controversy by saying that it was a lesson for women cricketers and the next time they go out in public in India, they would be cautious.
“Whenever any player goes anywhere, even when we go out, we always inform at least one local person. I think this will remind the players that, in the future, if we leave our venue, we should inform our security or local administration before leaving, as there is a huge craze for cricket players,” News18 quoted Vijayvargiya, senior BJP leader, as saying to NDTV.
“Sometimes, players don’t realise their popularity. Players are very popular, so they should be careful. This incident has happened; it’s a lesson for everyone. It’s a lesson for us and for the players as well," he added.
The man responsible for the case was arrested by the police, which sought his judicial custody for 15 days and got it as well.
As for the Australian women's team, they are now in Navi Mumbai to play the second semi-final of the ODI World Cup 2025 against hosts India for a place in the final.
