India batter Shreyas Iyer has been called-up for the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 second round match against Andhra, according to a report on ESPNCricinfo. If picked, this will be the first time Iyer would have made the Mumbai XI since the 2018-19 season. The right-handed batter will hope to return to form in the game ahead of India's Test series against England, which will begin on January 25 in Hyderabad. He was not in the best of forms in the recent series against South Africa, scoring 31, 6, 0 and 4* in the four innings.
Following a back surgery that kept him out of the World Test Championship (WTC) final and the tour of West Indies, Iyer returned to white-ball cricket playing key roles in India's campaign in the Asia Cup and the World Cup. Iyer scored 530 runs at 66.25 in 11 innings in the World Cup, finishing as the third-highest run-getter for his team behind Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
Following the World Cup, he was also named vice-captain for the last two T20 Internationals (T20I) against Australia.
Mumbai are already without Sarfaraz Khan, who has been picked in the India A squad for the two-day tour game against England Lions in Ahmedabad on January 12-13. On the other hand, Shivam Dube is part of the Indian team for the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, starting Thursday (January 11).
Prithvi Shaw continues to miss out as he is yet to recover from a knee injury. Ajinkya Rahane, who missed the first game of the new season due to neck spasms is expected to return and lead the side.
Mumbai squad: Ajinkya Rahane (c), Shreyas Iyer, Jay Bista, Bhupen Lalwani, Amogh Bhatkal, Suved Parkar, Prasad Pawar (wk), Hardik Tamore (wk), Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian, Atharva Ankolekar, Mohit Avasthi, Dhaval Kulkarni, Royston Dias, Sylvester Dsouza.
