In what comes as a big relief to the Indian side, Test captain Shubman Gill has been discharged from the hospital after he spent two days under medical supervision following sustaining a freak neck injury on day two of the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata.
Gill sustained the injury early on day two after sweeping Simon Harmer to the boundary, after which he retired hurt immediately and was sent to the Woodlands Multispeciality Hospital for treatment and observation. The Indian captain had a six-member medical board look after him and was discharged last night after two days of observation.
However, despite this, Gill’s participation in the second Test in Guwahati remains in doubt, as according to a Times of India report, the team India skipper has been advised to avoid air travel for the next few days.
According to the TOI report, “doctors have advised Gill to avoid commercial air travel during recovery, making it unlikely he will join the squad on their Wednesday flight.”
Additionally, he will also expectedly miss India's final training session in Kolkata on Tuesday.
The turnaround time works in Gill’s favour as it’s not until November 22 (Saturday) that the second Test starts, but he is currently in a race against time to be fit for that contest.
Should Gill not recover in time, Sai Sudharsan, who was axed for the first Test in Kolkata, will likely take his place in the starting XI. And India will be led by Rishabh Pant, who also took charge of the team on days two and three in Gill’s absence.
The Kolkata loss has already dented India’s World Test Championship (WTC) chances, as they are currently fourth with a PCT of just 54.17%. A loss in Guwahati will mean a second whitewash at home in as many years.
