Shubman Gill fined for criticising umpire’s decision on social media

Considering India lost 100 percent of their match fees for their slow over rate, the opener will have to pay the money back as part of his punishment

India’s new batting sensation Shubman Gill has been fined 15 percent of his match fee for criticising the television umpire Richard Kettleborough’s decision to give him out on the fourth day of the World Test Championship final against Australia, the International Cricket Council confirmed on Monday (June 12).

The young opener edged one to Cameron Green at gully and the big man dived to his left and took a one-handed blinder. Green took the catch and was in control of the ball but his hand went down and touched the ground. He had two fingers underneath the ball but the replays suggested some part of the ball might have touched the ground.

The camera angle wasn’t conclusive enough and the third umpire ruled him out, leaving Gill and his partner Rohit Sharma in disbelief. Gill took to social media later in the day to make a post that appeared to question the decision, breaching article 2.7 which relates to public criticism or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match.

Considering India lost 100 percent of their match fees for their slow over rate, Gill will have to pay the money back as part of his punishment given he has effectively incurred 115% of match fees in fines.

India were fives overs short of the target, while Australia were also fined 80 percent of their match fees for their slow over rate. In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players are fined 20 percent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

India lost the game by 209 runs on the final day of the Test match, helping Australia become the first nation to win all ICC titles.
