It’s history for Shubman Gill as in his very first series as Test captain, the 25-year-old has set a new all-time record, writing his name in the history books.
Gill, as it stands, has 737 runs to his name, which is the most by an Indian captain in any Test series. The right-hander broke the previous record held by Sunil Gavaskar, who had amassed 732 runs against West Indies in 1978/79.
737* - Shubman Gill, IND tour of ENG 2025
732 - Sunil Gavaskar, WI tour of IND 1978-79
655 - Virat Kohli, ENG tour of IND 2016
610 - Virat Kohli, SL tour of IND 2017
Gill, who smashed four hundreds across the first four Tests of the series, entered the fifth Test needing just 11 runs to break Gavaskar’s all-time India record, and he did so inside the first 20 balls of his innings. He latched on to the bowling of Jamie Overton, who, playing his first game of the series, was loose and leaked 16 runs off his first 3 overs.
Gill is now only 73 shy of Sir Don Bradman, who holds the all-time record for the most runs scored by a captain in a Test series (810 vs England in 1936). This is already the most runs scored by an away captain in a Test series.
