Sachin-Ganguly, Sachin-Sehwag, Gambhir-Sehwag, Rohit-Dhawan. Over the years, India have had some truly legendary opening partnerships. And the current side, too, has an absolutely great opening partnership in Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill.
The duo have batted together in ODIs 28 times and have scored an astonishing 1,943 runs at an average of 71.96. They’ve put on six century-run stands in just 28 hits together and have crossed the 50-run mark a whopping 18 times.
So what makes Gill-Rohit such a remarkable opening pair?
“I think the way we play the game in the powerplay is quite different to each other,” Gill explained ahead of the Pakistan clash.
“Rohit likes to play more aerial shots and try to hit those big sixes. I like to play along the ground. I like to pierce those gaps. And in between, if I feel, if I see the bowlers under pressure, then I take my chances, go over the circle.
“And I think that's the hallmark of us as a pair because we score boundaries with different shots. And the bowlers really have to think which areas to target for us because the areas that we play the shots are different to each other,” he said.
Against Bangladesh, Gill and Rohit added 69 runs together and killed the chase in the powerplay, taking just 59 balls.
