Indian Test skipper Shubman Gill is all but set to miss the Duleep Trophy 2025, starting on August 28 in Bengaluru, according to a report by Cricbuzz on August 23. Gill, who was appointed captain of the North Zone team, is reportedly unwell and is currently resting at his home in Chandigarh.
Gill recently underwent a medical examination by the team physios, and the report has been submitted to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
North Zone is scheduled to face South Zone at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground from August 28. Even if North Zone had advanced to the next round, Gill would have missed those games, as he is part of India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad, set to begin on September 9 in the UAE.
Gill has been in sensational form recently. In the IPL 2025, he captained Gujarat Titans (GT) to the playoffs, scoring 650 runs at an average of 50 and a strike rate of 155.88. Soon after, in his first major assignment as India’s Test captain, Gill further impressed by scoring 754 runs at 75.40 in a four-match series in England, leading India to a 2-2 draw.
With Gill unavailable, Services’ Shubham Rohilla was set to replace him once he departed for the Asia Cup. Meanwhile, Haryana’s Ankit Kumar, named vice-captain of the North Zone team, is likely to lead the side in Gill’s absence.
Other North Zone players, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, will also leave after the first round to join the Asia Cup squad. If North Zone progresses, they will be replaced by Gurnoor Brar and Anuj Thakral.
