Shubman Gill slammed his eighth One-Day International (OD) century in the first match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 against Bangladesh in Dubai on February 20 (Thursday). In doing so, he brought up India's 50th century at ICC ODI events.
50* - India
42 - Australia
35 - Sri Lanka
30 - South Africa
In pursuit of 229, Gill opened the innings with his skipper Rohit Sharma. The duo put on 69 for the first wicket inside 10 overs, with Gill scoring at over run-a-ball (26 off 23) at that point. However, once Rohit was dismissed, batting got a little trickier, and Gill adjusted accordingly.
As a result, he absorbed the pressure and held one end up after losing Virat Kohli (22), Shreyas Iyer (15) and Axar Patel (8). He got to his century off 125 deliveries, but India got home by five wickets with 21 balls to spare. This is also Gill's second century on the trot. He scored 112 of 102 in the previous game against England in Ahmedabad before coming into the Champions Trophy.
Moreover, among the Indian batters, he has taken the fewest innings (51) to reach eight ODI centuries, pipping Shikhar Dhawan (57).
India will be up against Pakistan next on February 23 (Sunday) in Dubai.
