Indian Test skipper Shubman Gill had a splendid series with the bat in England, where he was selected as the Player of the series by England and his former coach from Kolkata Knight Riders, Brendon McCullum.
Now, he has been given yet another opportunity to refine his red-ball game by the BCCI, as the North zone selectors have made him the skipper of the North Zone squad that will participate in the Duleep Trophy 2025, which will begin the domestic season in the country.
This time, the competition will be held in a Zonal format, with each state appointing one selector who would then form the Zonal selection committee. This is a separate selection structure from the National selectors led by Ajit Agarkar at the BCCI.
The other Indian players in the North Zone squad are Anshul Kamboj, Harshit Rana, and Arshdeep Singh. If any of Arshdeep, Rana or Gill get picked in India’s squad for the Asia Cup, they will be replaced by players who are already announced. Shubham Rohilla will replace Gill, Gurnoor Brar will replace Arshdeep, and Anuj Tharakan will fill in for Rana.
The squad’s vice-captain is Haryana’s Ankit Kumar, who scored 574 runs at an average of 59 in the Ranji Trophy last season. Nishant Sindhu is the other player from Haryana in the squad.
The squad has five players from Jammu & Kashmir, including opener Shubham Khajuria and pacer Auqib Nabi in the main squad, and three others in the standby list.
