Shubman Gill hasn’t yet recovered from dengue and will miss India’s next game against Afghanistan as well, the Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed on Monday (October 9). Rohit Sharma and Co. are set to take on Afghanistan in Delhi on Wednesday.
“Shubman Gill will not be travelling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023. He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team,” stated the release.
Two days before India’s opening encounter against Australia in Chennai on Sunday, the star opening batter tested positive for dengue and had to miss the match. He was reportedly weak after catching the fever and was advised to take rest.
The right-hander has been the most prolific batter for India in the ODI format in the last one year, averaging 72.35 in 2023 at a strike rate of 105.03. In 20 innings, he has five centuries and as many half-centuries, including a double century against New Zealand in Hyderabad.
Last month, he played a very important role in India beating Australia by scoring a 74 and 104 in two matches he participated in.
In his absence, Ishan Kishan opened the batting alongside Rohit Sharma. The two batters couldn’t even open their account and India were reduced to 2/3 in the 200-run chase, but Virat Kohli and KL Rahul put on 165 runs for the fourth wicket and won the game for India.
The Men in Blue are scheduled to play Pakistan in Ahmedabad on Saturday (October 14) and the team management would be eager to have Gill back for the marquee clash.
