Shubman Gill’s appointment as India’s Test captain was quite divided.
But two matches into the five-match Test series against England, Gill has been India’s best batter, amassing 585 runs in the series, averaging a staggering 146.25. He was India’s architect in their first-ever win in Birmingham, where he single-handedly smashed 430 runs, the most in a single Test for an Indian batter.
It has also largely shown in his captaincy, as India came back in the five-match series to level at 1-1. Sachin Tendulkar revealed that Gill’s batting has made a ‘huge difference’ in his decision-making.
“He’s been good. He’s very calm and composed, and I strongly believe that how the rest of the 10 players also react to whatever decision he has taken has been measured decisions, well thought of,” Tendulkar said in a video put out by Star Sports.
“His batting is complementing that as well because if a captain is in good form, it makes a huge difference in decision-making. You need to be in the right frame of mind to make those important calls. He’s been batting brilliantly,” Tendulkar added.
One of Gill’s biggest flaws before the series was his ability against in-duckers, but thus far, the right-hander has looked totally at ease. Sachin spoke about the change in technique, stating that that he’s been great thus far in the series.
“As an opposition, normally, you know they look to find weak areas in your batting. When your technique at this point of time, has been remarkable. Whatever I have seen, it’s been special. I am very happy you know the way we came back in the series in the second Test match after that disappointment in the first Test match,” he added.
