58-year-old jinx finally comes to an end, as Shubman Gill’s India became the first Indian side to win in Birmingham against England, on July 6 (Sunday). When the clash started, it didn’t look like India were going to cruise to such a dominant win in Jasprit Bumrah’s absence.
But by the time it ended, it was a one-way traffic, as India thoroughly outplayed and dominated England, winning by a margin of 336 runs. Gill led the team with his blade, with a 387-ball 269, with 30 fours and three sixes, the highest-ever score for an Indian captain.
Gill didn’t stop there, with a second century in the Test, going past all records, with India going past the 1000-run tally, a record in Indian cricketing history. But his biggest record over the last five days was becoming the first Indian captain to capture a win here in Birmingham.
India’s 336-run win was also India’s third-highest victory in Test history, following a 434-run win against England (2024) and a 372-run win against New Zealand (2021).
