Shubman Gill was in the headlines for all the wrong reasons during India’s heartbreaking 22-run loss against England at Lord’s. After scoring 430 runs in the previous clash in Birmingham, Gill couldn’t make any impact at Lord’s, with scores of 16 and 6, succumbed under the pressure of a tricky run chase.
But in the field, there was an incident during England’s second innings, when the Indian skipper delivered a brutal verbal assault against Zak Crawley, asking the English opener to ‘grow some ****ing **lls’.
It triggered a widespread debate whether Gill was being himself or was just trying to be like former Indian skipper Virat Kohli. There were questions about whether the assault was planned. Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj answered, stating that there’s ‘no pre-planning’.
“There’s no pre-planning,” Siraj answered.
“It happens in the moment. If a batter’s in the zone, you try to disturb him and get into his head. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. But as a fast bowler, it’s fun,” he added.
That indeed went on to add more spice to the rivalry, as England gave it back to the visitors during the fourth innings, as they succumbed to a heartbreaking loss.
“Maybe. Depends on the situation. A little bit of chatter can shake things up.”
India will now look to get back in the series, on July 23 (Wednesday), when they take on England in Manchester.
