In His Final Test, Angelo Mathews Becomes Mominul’s First Test Victim Since 2023

Mathews was batting on 39 and looked set not just for a fifty, but a potential century in his final Test

Sri Lankan legend Angelo Mathews endured a rather tame and anti-climactic dismissal in his last ever appearance in Test cricket as he fell to the part-time spin of Mominul Haque with a half-century there for the taking.

Mathews was batting on 39 and looked set not just for a fifty, but a potential century in his final Test. However, against the run of play, he ended up nicking one off the bowling of Mominul.

It was quite the unexpected dismissal as prior to this Test, Mominul’s last Test wicket had come back in November 2023, against New Zealand in Sylhet. He had then gone nine straight innings wicketless before claiming the huge scalp of Mathews today.

This was Mominul’s 11th Test wicket. And he’s claimed some pretty massive wickets, including the likes of Faf du Plessis, Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Kock and now Mathews.

Even if Mathews ends up registering a duck in the second innings - if Sri Lanka bat again - he is now guaranteed to finish his career with a Test average over 44.00. Among Sri Lankans with over 6,000 runs, only Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jaywardene can boast of a better average. Earlier in the day, Mathews got a guard of honour from the Bangladesh players as he walked out to bat.
