Former India captain and former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly questions current India Test captain Rohit Sharma’s form and mental status in the game's longest format after his continuous failure.
"I don't know where Rohit is mentally. It is very difficult to comment right now," Ganguly was quoted as saying to TV9 Bangla.
"Rohit Sharma is not able to score runs. He played a loose shot in the first innings. There is a second innings here in Melbourne and two more innings in Sydney so he needs to play well. India will need Rohit to fire," he added.
Ganguly is right in that Rohit has had a very poor year in Tests except for the England series at home, where he scored two centuries and a fifty. If one takes those three innings away, Rohit would average 15 in 2024, including suffering terrible fate in home series.
In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, the Indian skipper has scores of 3,9,10,3 and 6 in the five innings.
Virat Kohli, the senior most member of the Indian team also has only one century to his credit. Even after that Ganguly feels that it is just a matter of time before he gets back to his original self because he is playing the right shots.
"Virat Kohli is not playing badly, but just getting out. He scored a century in Perth, was set in the first innings (Melbourne) and was playing nicely," he said.
