Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) might have had a mega auction in between. However, they began the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the same fashion with the bat as they batted in the last season in 2024.
SRH were asked to bat first after losing the toss against Rajasthan Royal (RR) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, and they made full use of the great batting surface at their home ground. SRH ended the powerplay with 94/1 on the board and hit 15 fours in the process, the most in IPL history in powerplays.
Left-handed openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head began in fiery fashion, with Sharma getting going from the first over itself. He batted for 11 deliveries and scored five fours in that period. Meanwhile, Head was going ballistic from the other end as he began opening his hands in the second over and smashed Maheesh Theekshana for a four and a six in the second.
Sharma then smacked three crisp fours in the next over, bowled by Fazalhaq Farooqi, but was out on the first ball in the fourth over. The new batter, Ishan Kishan, continued from where Sharma had left and smashed two fours in his first three deliveries. Some next-level carnage occurred in the fifth over, which was bowled by Jofra Archer. He was smoked away for four fours and a huge 105 metre six by Head.
With three more fours coming in the sixth over, SRH ended the powerplay with 94/1 on the board, the highest powerplay total against RR in the IPL.
