India's premier pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, is all set to step on the field for the Mumbai Indians in the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on April 7 (Monday). Coach Mahela Jayawardene informed in the pre-match press conference that MI’s ace pacer has been bowling in the nets, and National Cricket Academy has cleared him to play. He’s now under the care of MI’s physios.
Notably, Bumrah has missed all of MI's games so far as he continues to recover from a back injury that has kept him out of action since the end of the Australia tour in January. He consequently missed England’s white-ball tour to India and then India's Champions Trophy 2025 campaign as well.
“He's available, he's training today, and should be available [for the RCB game]," Jayawardene informed.
"He arrived last night, he had his sessions with NCA [National Cricket Academy, now Centre of Excellence] to finalise that, he's been handed over to our physios. He's bowling today, so all good.
“Boom's coming back from a pretty decent layoff, so we need to give him that space. Not expecting too much. Knowing Jasprit, he will be up for it. We're very happy to have him in the camp. The experience he brings, that extra voice out there in the middle, chatting with Boulty [Trent Boult], chatting with Deepak [Chahar] or any other younger bowler, giving that advice is also very valuable for us. That's what we're looking forward to from him.”
Earlier, MI announced his return on X with a colourful video titled "Ready to Roar. " In the video, his wife Sanjana reads Bumrah's IPL story and calls the pacer the "King of the Jungle." No MI bowler has picked up more wickets than Bumrah in the IPL since his debut in 2013. In this period, he has picked up 165 wickets at an economy rate of 7.3.
MI have struggled this season in Bumrah's absence, having lost three of four games so far. They will hope to turn things around against RCB.
