Stats: Most runs in LOIs, only ENG player with T20 & ODI WC, and many more

England’s prolonged and the most successful limited overs captain Eoin Morgan, calls time on his International career. Here are a few stats from his illustrious career

Starting his career with Ireland in 2006, Morgan shifted to England in 2009. He is one among the 15 players to represent two countries in ODIs. Rest of his journey with England, has been historical, especially in the limited overs format. On Tuesday, 28th June, Morgan announced his retirement from international cricket. We take you through his career in numbers:

At the pinnacle in limited overs format for England

In the debut year for England in the ODIs (2009), Morgan was amongst the runs. He started off his campaign by scoring 363 runs that year. Later on, in none of the calendar years till 2020, Morgan scored less than 300 runs.

In 2018, in his innings of 67 against Australia, Morgan surpassed Ian Bell’s tally of 5416 to become the highest run scorer for England. At present, Morgan’s 6957 runs are the most in ODIs. In the shortest format of the game as well, Morgan’s 2458 runs are the most for England.

Morgan has scored 9415 runs in the limited overs format (ODIs & T20Is), the most for an England batter. He is 2413 runs ahead of Joe Root. In addition, his 69 scores of over 50, are also the most. In ODIs, he has 55 scores of 50+, the most and in the T20Is, he has 14, two less than Jos Buttler’s 16. In the tally of centuries, Morgan has 13 ODI centuries, only behind Root’s 16.

The only England player to have both World Cups

In Morgan’s debut World Cup edition as captain in 2015, they crashed out in the league stages. This was only the second time after 1999, that England exited in the preliminary stages of an ODI WC.

However, Morgan’s team were completely different in the previous edition. By winning the title in 2019, Morgan became the first England captain to lift the coveted trophy. Earlier in 2010, when England won the T20 WC, Morgan was a part of the squad. By winning both the World Cups, Morgan became the first England player to be a part of the WC winning team in both formats.

Starting off the captaincy with a bang

In 2011, against his former team Ireland, Morgan captained for the first time in ODIs. Until 2015, he was the interim captain of England. Regardless of that, in his first 10 matches as a captain, Morgan had smashed six 50+ scores in nine innings, including two centuries.

This purple patch also included a 50+ score in each of his first three innings. In ODIs, he is still the second batter to score 50+ in the first three innings of captaincy. Asif Iqbal of Pakistan, had achieved this feat in his first four innings, spanning from 1975 to 1979.

Hitting sixes at will

There is no doubt about Morgan’s power hitting abilities. His 202 sixes being the most for an England player, is a testimony of it. In fact, he is the only batter to hit 200+ sixes for England. The next in line, Buttler (144), doesn’t even have 150 to his name.

To emboss more, none of the England captains have hit more than 20 when Morgan has 147 to his name. To be precise, his 147 sixes are not only the most for England. In ODIs, no teams’ captain has hit more than him. MS Dhoni with 126, is second in line. In both formats of the white-ball, Morgan leads the list. In T20Is, he has 86 sixes to his name. All combined, Morgan has hit 233 sixes as the captain of England.

The counter-attacking instinct, a trend set by Morgan’s England

Under the captaincy of Morgan, England were a different batting unit. In his tenure of 126 matches, England had scored at a run rate of 6.1. This is the highest for a team under a captain who has led them in 75+ ODIs.

In this duration, England smashed 400+ totals five times, which also includes the top three highest totals for a team in ODIs. More in depth, under his captaincy, England scored 300+ totals in 47 innings. Whereas, no other England captain had seen more than 10. As a matter of fact, no team has scored 300+ totals in more innings under a specific captain as England have under Morgan.

A World Cup to remember

In the 2019 WC, against Afghanistan, Morgan scored 148 off just 71 balls, his best ODI score. However, this innings was not about his personal best. In his knock, Morgan had smashed 17 sixes, which is the most by a batsman in an ODI innings. Previously, there were four instances of a batsman hitting 16 sixes in an innings.

Throughout the 2019 edition of WC, Morgan scored 371 runs, which is the most for an England captain in an edition. Prior to him, Mike Gatting in 1987 WC, had smashed 354 runs. To add more, he had scored those runs at a strike rate of 111.1. Among skippers who have scored 300+ runs in an edition, only Brendon McCullum (188.5) in 2015 and AB de Villiers (144.3) in the same edition, had better strike rates.

Few other stats

In ODIs for England, Morgan has the joint-second fastest half century. Against Australia in 2018, Morgan had smashed a half-century in just 21 balls.

In his debut ODI innings for Ireland, Morgan was dismissed on 99, making him the only player to suffer this fate on debut.

Amidst the highs, Morgan had few lows in his career. Combined from both the formats of white-ball, Morgan had 18 ducks, which is the most for an England player. He suffered 15 ducks in ODIs and three in T20Is.

Morgan is the only England captain to lead in 100+ ODIs. In 126 matches, England won 76 matches with a win percentage of 65.3. In terms of win percentage, only Mike Gatting has a better ratio (70.3%) among England captains with 10+ matches.
