Sune Luus to lead South Africa Women in ODI series against West Indies
NEWSChloe Tryon has been named her deputy for the series
All-rounder Sune Luus will lead South Africa Women in the One-Day International (ODI) series against West Indies Women at home in the absence of regular skipper Dane Van Niekerk, who is out due to an injury.
The first of the four ODIs will be played on January 28 and will conclude on February 6. Chloe Tryon has been picked as her deputy. All the matches will be played at the Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg.
“Suné has really managed the captaincy quite well in the absence of our leaders, Dané and Chloé, and we are quite excited to be giving her the role again and in our conversations with her, she really rolled out the pathway for us, getting through the West Indies tour and for the World Cup," Convenor of Selectors, Clinton du Preez said
“We are quite happy to have her back in that role and I am sure the leadership and the senior players in the team will give her massive support.
"Chloé as the vice-captain is a great combination between the two individuals and personalities and we think it will be a balanced approach for our successes,” he concluded.
ICC Women's ODI Cricketer of the Year will miss the series as she is currently recovering from Covid-19. However, the squad consists of other experienced players like Shabnim Ismail, Mignon du Preez and Laura Wolvaardt to name a few, who will be entrusted to continue their good run of form against West Indies, ahead of the World Cup.
South Africa had beaten West Indies in the ODI series in the Caribbean in September last year. South Africa were denied a 5-0 clean sweep after West Indies won the final game via super over. The two teams had also played a three-match T20I series which ended 1-1.
