Suranga Lakmal to retire from international cricket after India tour

The 34-year-old has called time on his international career that has spanned 13 years

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) have confirmed that veteran pacer Suranga Lakmal, who made his international debut back in 2009, will be retiring from all forms of international cricket following the tour of India that will commence later this month. Lakmal wrote to the board informing them about his decision to call it a day after representing the country for 13 years.

“I’m indebted to Sri Lanka Cricket for giving me this astonishing opportunity and having faith in me to bring back my mother land honour as it has been absolute pleasure to be associated with the board that shaped my professional life and also enriched my personal development,” said Lakmal in his retirement letter submitted to Sri Lanka Cricket.

“I have nothing but the utmost respect for all my players, coaches, team managers, support staff, administrative staff and all other supportive staff.”

A former Test skipper, Lakmal has represented Sri Lanka in a total of 165 international matches, taking 285 wickets in the process. The 34-year-old, in particular, has been a vital cog in Test cricket, and has been one of the most improved players in recent times, averaging a remarkable 24.73 across his last 26 Tests. Incidentally, it was also against India that the former skipper made his first ever international appearance.

Ashley De Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket, thanked the veteran for his services.

“We take this opportunity to wish Lakmal the very best for his future endeavors, and looking forward to seeing him perform for the country during the Sri Lanka Tour of India, if the selectors consider him for the tour,’’ said Ashley De Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket.

‘’Lakmal has been an excellent contributor for Sri Lanka Cricket and delivered some memorable spells during his national career, and his services will be remembered well.’’ added De Silva.
