Despite just 29 international games under his belt, Tilak Varma’s stock as a future superstar is already on the rise. The left-hander has been in quite a form over the last two years, since his debut, with 749 runs in the shortest format, averaging 49.93 with the bat.
Moreover, he’s also scored two hundreds, both of which came against a strong South African side in South Africa, further boosting his credentials. Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina added to that, calling the 22-year-old Indian cricket’s future superstar, adding that he has it in his ‘eyes’.
“I feel Tilak [Varma] is a future superstar in Indian cricket. He has that in his eyes; he’s definitely captain material,” Raina told Ranveer Allahbadia on his show, ‘Taakat’.
The former Indian batter also praised current Indian opener, Yashasvi Jaiswal, whom he hailed as a ‘Lambi race ka ghoda [Player for the long run]’. In his short Test career, Jaiswal has already notched up multiple important knocks for India away in SENA conditions, with his century setting up the clash in Perth, and his 80 odd setting India’s big win in Birmingham.
“Yashasvi Jaiswal, I feel, is like Dhruv [Jurel], and his performance in Australia was top-notch. I feel he’s ‘Lambi race ka ghoda [Player for the long run].
He couldn’t help but compliment India’s newest Test skipper, Shubman Gill, who already has tormented England with his batting display. The 25-year-old has 430 runs in the ongoing five-match Test series against England.
“Look at Gill, he’s 25, he has that mentality, and he performs under pressure. He’s just built differently,” he added.
Raina also felt that the troika of Dhruv Jurel, Rinku Singh and Nitish Kumar Reddy aren’t too far away from the others.
