Surya needs to be given a proper run in ODIs to figure out his potential: Rohit

Suryakumar Yadav registered second consecutive golden ducks in the series

Shreyas Iyer has been the most consistent batter for Team India in the last couple of years and that solved one massive problem for Team India. However, with Iyer being out of the squad due to a recurring back issue, India had to persist with Suryakumar Yadav in the 50-Over format of the game, a move that didn’t work out with the Mumbaikar registering second consecutive golden ducks in the series.

That raised questions about Yadav’s credentials in the 50-Over format, despite him being the numero uno player in the shortest format of the game. When Rohit Sharma was asked about the same in the post-match press conference, he asked for a bit more patience with the 32-year-old.

“We don’t know about Iyer’s return at this time. There is a spot available and Surya has shown a lot of potential in white-ball cricket,” Rohit said. “Have said many times before that guys with potential need to be given a long run. Of course, he knows that he needs to do it better in the slightly longer formats of the game as well.

“Things are there in his mind as well. But like I said, guys with potential need to be given enough rope at that particular slot. Yes, he has got out in the last two games and in the previous series as well. But he needs to be given a consistent run. Like back-to-back games. So that he feels more comfortable.

“Right now he has got the chance because someone is injured or someone is not available. That is not ideal. After being given a consistent run, if you realize, runs are not coming or he is looking uncomfortable, then we’ll start thinking about it,” the Indian skipper added.

India suffered a 10-wicket loss at the hands of the Aussies, with Australia chasing down the 118-run total in 11 overs. Was there any concern around bowling due to Bumrah’s absence? Rohit stated that the team learnt to live without Bumrah, who he added, was a massive player to be replaced easily.

“Bumrah is absent for more than eight months now. Boys have got used to it. Look, it is very hard to fill Bumrah’s shoes. But now that he is not available for us, let’s not just keep thinking about that. Guys have taken the responsibilities as well. These guys have done the job for us in many occasions,” the Mumbaikar added.
