Suryakumar Yadav named ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year

Meanwhile, on the women’s side, Australia’s Tahlia McGrath has been named the T20I Cricketer of the year

The world’s number one ranked male T20I batter has yet another feather in his cap as Suryakumar Yadav has been named the ICC’s Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year for the calendar year 2022. Suryakumar Yadav beat Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza, England’s Sam Curran and Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan to the award.

2022 was only Suryakumar Yadav’s second year in international cricket, but a stunning year saw the 32-year-old break all sorts of records in the shortest format.

In what was an astonishing 12 months, Suryakumar, in 2022, amassed 1164 runs in 31 innings at an average of 46.56 and a jaw-dropping strike rate of 187.43. He hit 68 sixes, the most by any batter in a single calendar year in T20I history. He became only the second batter in history to amass more than 1000 T20I runs in a single year, after Rizwan in 2021, and struck two hundreds and nine fifties.

Though his stunning efforts did not translate into World Cup glory for India, 2022 saw Suryakumar make the shortest format his own.

Meanwhile, on the women’s side, Australia’s Tahlia McGrath has been named the T20I Cricketer of the year. The 27-year-old all-rounder, in 2022, smashed 435 runs in 16 matches at an average of 62.14 but also made a significant impact with the ball in hand, picking 13 wickets at an economy of 6.95.

McGrath’s efforts with bat and ball played a huge hand in the Aussies losing a solitary T20I in the entirety of 2022.
