India have already embarked on a new journey in T20 Internationals (T20I) with the retirements of stalwarts like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. They have done well in the shortest format since winning the T20 World Cup 2024, and will hope to continue their impressive run in the Asia Cup as well.
India's next match in the Asia Cup will be against arch-rivals Pakistan in Dubai on September 14 (Sunday), and former India batter Atul Wassan believes India have moved on from the Kohli-Rohit era and the current team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, is good enough to beat Pakistan.
“I will not miss Rohit and Virat because then I will start missing Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev also. The king is dead, long live the king. Things move, new superstars come in, and this embarrassment of riches, and I feel sorry for the selectors because to keep everyone in the mix, because who’s to drop and who’s to pick,” Wassan said in a chat with CNN-News18.
Former spinner Piyush Chawla also lauded the depth of the current Indian team, so much so that their leading T20I wicket-taker Arshdeep Singh could not find a place in the XI in the previous match against the UAE.
“If you look at the current Indian team, the amount of games that they have won post the Rohit and Kohli era in T20 cricket, they are doing a wonderful job. Somebody like Arshdeep is not getting a chance in the playing XI, being in the top five of world T20 bowlers. I think this team looks really set, and you always miss these kinds of players,” Chawla said.
India have a superior T20I record over Pakistan, having won 10 of the 13 matches against them.
