Madan Lal, the former India cricketer and selector, has strongly voiced that the decision about when Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma end their international careers should rest entirely with them. “It is their decision and not anybody else’s. So [it should be] whatever they decide,” he told PTI, as quoted by the Indian Express.
His remarks underline the fact that public speculation or media pressure should not dictate the trajectory of two of India’s most accomplished batters. Highlighting their recent form and energy, Madan Lal emphasised that age should not be the only yardstick.
“They are still very, very fresh and look like they are some 28- or 30-year-olds,” he said, pointing out that both veterans continue to play with the agility, sharpness and enthusiasm akin to much younger players. He added praise for their approach on the field.
“The way Virat Kohli is running between the wickets while taking the singles and hitting the balls. It’s nice to see the way they are going.”
Madan Lal’s comments come amid ongoing speculation about whether Kohli and Rohit, both of whom have already retired from Test and T20I cricket, will continue in the ODI format, possibly up to the next World Cup.
Given their sustained fitness, recent match performances in the ODI series against Australia and South Africa, it would seem premature to write off their international careers. As of now, both the veterans are also gearing up to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy for their state sides after completing the ODI series against South Africa.
