The Australian opening pair of Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh have shattered a record that stood for over 22 years. They now hold the record for the highest opening partnership against South Africa in One-Day Internationals (ODI). They achieved this feat during the third ODI against South Africa in Mackay on August 24 (Sunday).
In doing so, they broke the record of 200, which Vikram Solanki and Marcus Trescothick put on for the first wicket against the Proteas in 2003.
201* Travis Head-Mitchell Marsh, Mackay, 2025
200 Vikram Solanki-Marcus Trescothick, The Oval, 2003
193 Sourav Ganguly-Sachin Tendulkar, Johannesburg, 2001
193 Shivnarine Chanderpaul-Chris Gayle, Johannesburg, 2004
170 Adam Gilchrist-Matthew Hayden, Durban, 2002
This is also just the fourth instance of Australia's openers putting up over 200 for the first wicket at home. Head was part of two of them - in 2017 and then in 2022 - with David Warner as his partner.
Head brought up his seventh ODI century off just 80 deliveries, and Marsh too could get there as he was into the 80s at the time of writing this.
South Africa have already taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. The Proteas won the first game in Cairns by 98 runs and followed that up with an 84-run victory in the second game in Mackay.
