After Mitchell Starc, two South African players - Faf du Plessis and Donovan Ferreira - have also informed Delhi Capitals (DC) that they won’t return for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
Du Plessis missed a few games because of an injury, but in the six games that he featured in, the right-hander scored 168 runs at an average of 28 and a strike rate of 128.24. Meanwhile, Ferreira only played one game.
Jake Fraser-McGurk also won’t be returning to India, and DC have replaced him with Bangladesh’s left-arm seamer Mustafizur Rahman, whose participation in the competition is not 100 percent certain. Meanwhile, Tristan Stubbs will be available but will return after the league stage to prepare for the World Test Championship (WTC) final, to be played at Lord’s from June 11.
The IPL 2025 was suspended after cross-border tensions escalated between India and Pakistan, but is now set to resume on May 17. The Capitals have 13 points after 11 matches and need to win all their remaining three games to qualify for the playoffs. DC can even qualify if they win two of those three games, but will then need a couple of results to go in their favour.
DC will take on table-toppers Gujarat Titans (GT) on May 18 in Delhi. As things stand, Sediqullah Atal, Stubbs and Dushmantha Chameera are the only three overseas players available for DC. There’s still no clear update on Mustafizur’s availability.
