Uncapped Tanzid Hasan named in Bangladesh's Asia Cup 2023 squad

Mahedi,Hasan, Shamim Hossain and Nasum Ahmed too have been recalled for the six-team tournament

Bangladesh have announced their squad for Asia Cup 2023 a day after appointing Shakib Al Hasan as their new One-Day International (ODI) captain. Uncapped batter Tanzid Hasan has been named in Bangladesh's 17-member squad for the tournament, which also marks the return of off-spinner Mahedi Hasan, who last featured in an ODI in 2021.

Tanzid slammed three fifties in the recent ACC Emerging Cup in Sri Lanka recently and also fared well in the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) this season, scoring 474 runs at 43.09, which included two tons and a fifty in 11 innings. The southpaw was also part of Bangladesh's triumphant Under-19 World Cup campaign, scoring 166 runs at a strike-rate of 101.

Mahedi, on the other hand, returns to the squad after picking up 18 wickets at 26.55 in DPL last season and has followed that up with eight more wickets in 202 and also fared well in the ACC Emerging Cup.

Along with Mahedi, Shamim Hossain and Nasum Ahmed too have been recalled to the squad. With Tamim Iqbal ruled out of the tournament, the inclusion of Mohammad Naim at the top seems to be a long-term option for the team. Bangladesh have however not picked veteran all-rounder Mahmudullah, who last played ODIs against England in March this year.

The 37-year-old however remains in contention for a place in the future, but the Bangladesh selectors have picked a relatively young squad for the Asia Cup, keeping one eye on the future. He was believed to have been rested for the ODIs agianst Ireland and Afghanistan.

Taijul Islam and Rony Talukdar who were part of the ODI series against Afghanistan, do not find a place in the Asia Cup squad. Bangladesh begin their Asia Cup 2023 campaign against Sri Lanka in Pallekele on August 31.
