Butchered in Birmingham? Maybe if Netflix are looking for a title for India’s record-breaking show against England in the second Test, it can’t get better than that.
On July 5 (Saturday), Shubman Gill’s India, in just the second Test, broke a 22-year-old record in Test history, smashing 933 runs and counting. It bettered their efforts back in 2003, when Sachin Tendulkar scored a legacy-defining double century.
If it was Sachin then, it is Gill now as the new generation led by example, smashing the most runs for an Indian batter in a Test. India’s efforts in Birmingham easily surpassed their batting show against Pakistan back in 2007, when they scored 910 in Bengaluru.
Not just that, the new Indian skipper also smashed 412 runs in the ongoing Test, which is the most for any batter against England in a single Test.
933* vs ENG, Birmingham, 2025
916 vs AUS, Sydney, 2003
910 vs PAK, Bengaluru, 2007
875 vs ENG, Rajkot, 2024
848 vs ENG, Nottingham, 2014
At the time of writing this, India had already extended their lead to well over 560 runs, and if England are to chase this down, they will have to defy Test cricketing history.
