Contrary to recent reports, star Indian batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have not been named in India A’s squad for the upcoming three-match one-day series against Australia A, scheduled in Kanpur from September 30.
There had been speculation that Kohli and Rohit - both now retired from Tests and T20Is - might play in the India A series to get some match practice ahead of India’s tour of Australia next month. However, that will not be the case.
Rajat Patidar has been named captain for the first game, while Tilak Varma will join the squad for the remaining two matches and take over as captain, with Patidar as his deputy. The 50-over fixtures will be played on September 30, October 3, and October 5.
Tilak is currently in the UAE for the ongoing Asia Cup 2025, with the final scheduled for September 28, which is why he will be available only from the second game.
Apart from Tilak, other Asia Cup squad members Abhishek Sharma, Harshit Rana, and Arshdeep Singh will also join from the second match. Priyansh Arya and Simarjeet Singh have been picked exclusively for the first game.
Vipraj Nigam, who impressed in his debut IPL season for Delhi Capitals earlier this year, has earned a call-up. Riyan Parag, Ayush Badoni, Suryansh Shedge, and Nishant Sindhu are the other all-rounders in the squad.
