Kohli, Rohit, Bumrah to be rested for Sri Lanka tour: Report
The trio are expected to be available from the series against Bangladesh
Indian trio of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah are likely to be rested for the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, starting July 27, according to a report on Indian Express. They are expected to return for the home series against Bangladesh, which will get underway from September 19. The tour will include two Tests and three T20 Internationals (T20I). While Rohit and Kohli have announced their T20I retirement, Bumrah will continue to feature heavily for India, given that he plays all three formats for them.
Other than the series agianst Bangladesh, India will also host New Zealand for three Tests in October-November, after which they will head to South Africa for five T20Is in November, followed by the Border-Gavaskar Tests in Australia.
“Senior players can take some rest and get ready for the full cricket season ahead. Rohit, Virat and Bumrah have been offered rest and will join the team for the Test matches against Bangladesh in September,” a source in the BCCI told The Indian Express.
India are already fielding a second-string side in the ongoing T20Is in Zimbabwe, with Shubman Gill leading the side. VVS Laxman is the interim coach of the side as BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced that the new head coach will take charge from the Sri Lanka series, taking over the spoils from Rahul Dravid.
Gautam Gambhir is the front-runner to take charge and it is understood that the BCCI and the former India opener are in the final stages of salary negotiations.
Rohit-led side recently won the T20 World Cup, pipping South Africa in the final in Barbados on June 29. This was India's first ICC trophy since 2013 and their first T20 World Cup since 2007.
