Two of India’s most decorated batters, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, have already announced their retirements from T20Is and Tests but will continue playing the 50-over format and are eager to feature in the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
However, former India captain and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly feels it won’t be easy for the two to maintain their form while playing only one format. As of now, the Men in Blue are scheduled to play 27 ODIs before the next World Cup, and both Kohli and Rohit would want as much game time as possible.
"It won't be easy. 15 games a year. I've got no advice. I think they know the game as much as I do, and they will take a call. But all of us must understand that just like everyone, the game will go away from them, and they will go away from the game," Ganguly told PTI, as reported by Hindustan Times.
The two batters recently featured in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
Both Kohli and Rohit have performed exceptionally well in the 50-over format for India. Since 2023, Rohit has scored 1,714 runs at an average of 48.97 and a strike rate of 117.2, while Kohli has amassed 1,710 runs at an average of 61.07 and a strike rate of 95.8.
