Virat Kohli would have definitely made it: Sunil Gavaskar on mix-up with Jaiswal

The duo put on 102 for the third wicket to bring India back into the game

India had a chance to end day two of the fourth Test against Australia in Melbourne on a high, but Yashasvi Jaiswal was run out for 82 following a mix-up with Virat Kohli after putting on 102 for the third wicket.

From there on, India collapsed from 153/2 to 159/5 and eventually ended the day on 164/5, still trailing Australia by 310 runs. Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar believes Kohli would have definitely made the run had he not lost a second or two watching the ball.

"It would have been a quick run, and somebody like Virat Kohli would definitely have made it. But the thing was, he looked at the fielder. When you look at the fielder, when you turn, you've lost that vital second. And so naturally, you then think, 'No, I want to be able to make it.' Your balance is completely off," Gavaskar observed.

"And it would have been a tight run. I think at that stage, why do you need to take a run that carries an element of risk? You're batting well, runs are coming. At that stage, the risk was not really necessary. But it could have been completed only because Kohli is such a fantastic runner between the wickets."

Jaiswal fell 18 short of a well-deserved century, while Kohli was dismissed seven balls later for 36. The five-match series is currently level at 1-1. India won the first Test by 295 runs, while Australia bounced back with a 10-wicket victory in Adelaide before rain interruptions forced the Brisbane Test into a draw.

After MCG, the final Test will be played in Sydney, Starting January 3, 2025.
