Warner, Maxwell and Test seamers rested for white-ball leg of Pakistan tour
Cricket Australia won’t be allowing their players to join the IPL till the Pakistan series is over
David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc are all set to miss the limited-overs leg of Australia's upcoming tour of Pakistan. Australia are scheduled to play three Tests (March 4 - 25), three ODIs (March 29 - April 2) and a solitary T20I (April 5) in Pakistan.
Apart from Starc, all the other four players are set to feature in the Indian Premier League 2022 but Cricket Australia won’t be allowing their stars to join the Indian T20 league till the Pakistan series is over. However, they will be allowed to travel to India once the Test series is over, complete their quarantine requirements and be available to play from April 6.
Sean Abbott, Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Ellis, Mitchell Marsh and Marcus Stoinis are some of the other players who will feature in the forthcoming edition of the IPL but could miss at least another week owing to travel and quarantine requirements. With no direct flights between Pakistan and India, the IPL-bound players will have to travel to India via Dubai.
"We have picked a talented and versatile squad with a number of challenges to juggle, including the tour structure of predominantly 50-over games, management of several multi-format players in the medium to long term; and our need to build experience and depth in preparation for two short-form World Cups within the next 18 months," national selector George Bailey said.
"There's no doubt it's been a pretty intense schedule the last six months and even if you look ahead the next 18 months so it's about working with those individuals and the squad as a whole that you are trying to meet the needs of everything. This squad was a bit of a challenge."
Maxwell has been granted leave from the Pakistan tour for his wedding. Matthew Wade, who was signed on by Gujarat Titans, will not travel to Pakistan considering they will be playing only one T20I, and in his absence, Josh Inglis will stand behind the stumps.
Meanwhile, the likes of Riley Meredith, Daniel Sams, Tim David and Nathan Coulter-Nile are not on a Cricket Australia contract and are free to link up with their respective IPL franchises after their state commitments are over. This is only applicable for Meredith and Sams as David and Coulter-Nile don't even hold state contracts.
Australia's ODI and T20 squad: Aaron Finch (c), Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Jason Behrendorff, Alex Carey, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Marsh, Ben McDermott, Kane Richardson, Steve Smith, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa.
