Washington Sundar to miss South Africa ODIs after positive Covid test: Report

The 22-year-old will reportedly not fly to South Africa following the test result

All-rounder Washington Sundar, who was named in India’s extended squad for the three-match ODI series against South Africa, will reportedly now miss the series after testing positive for Covid-19. Sundar, after missing the England tour, IPL 2021 and the T20 World Cup with injury, impressed in the Vijay Hazare Trophy by finishing as Tamil Nadu’s highest wicket-taker with 16 wickets, following which he was named in the ODI squad for South Africa.

But according to Cricbuzz, the 22-year-old has tested positive for Covid-19 and will not even be traveling to the Rainbow Nation.

"He tested positive some days back and it has been decided that he will not travel with the squad,” Cricbuzz quoted a source in the BCCI as saying.

Should the news of Sundar testing positive be true, then it would mean a certain place in the starting XI for Ravichandran Ashwin, who last played ODI cricket back in 2017. The first of the three ODIs will be played at Boland Park in Paarl on January 19.
