Wasim Jaffer 'Surprised & Shocked' By Yashasvi Jaiswal's Goa Move
After a string of low scores, the 23-year-old finally came good against PBKS in the IPL
Yashasvi Jaiswal shocked the country when he announced that he would leave Mumbai and move to Goa for the upcoming domestic season. There were some reports of unrest between Jaiswal, skipper Ajinkya Rahane, and other players, which has prompted the 23-year-old to switch allegiance.
However, former Mumbai captain Wasim Jaffer says he was "surprised and shocked" to see Jaiswal move away from Mumbai, especially at such a young age.
"No matter what Goa was offering him. You don't leave Mumbai, especially at this age," Jaffer said on ESPNcricinfo's TimeOut show.
"It's okay if somebody is 34-35 then you want to go out. That [differences with Mumbai team management] must have prompted him to take this decision, but I think leaving Mumbai is a shocking decision.
"He's a powerhouse. Somebody who has played from Under-14s to now, for Mumbai and Goa being a plate-group team that has just come into the elite group - for him to go and play there, whatever time he will spend on first-class cricket, I am surprised he's taken that decision so soon."
Despite BCCI's new directive ordering players to play domestic cricket, Jaffer feels that Jaiswal's aim should not be to play in Ranji Trophy but to play all formats for India.
"He shouldn't be looking to play Ranji Trophy," Jaffer said. "For somebody like him, he should be playing for India in all three formats. That should be his focus," Jaffer added.
After three low scores in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Jaiswal bounced back with a 45-ball 67 against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Mullanpur on April 5 (Saturday). Jaiswal and Rajasthan Royals (RR) will next be in action against Gujarat Titans (GT) on April 9 (Wednesday).
